Reeking of a Famous Concoction: Shit, Lack of Water, Cheap Perfume

00:00 / 00:00

Why can’t I understand
that there are basically two kinds of people,
those who really love this Tuesday
(but only this one, because tomorrow is this Wednesday,
which means that some other time it might be Wednesday, too,
but not this one. This Wednesday, i.e.
tomorrow, happens to be a holiday.
Which is why, even more than this Tuesday,
and even more than this Wednesday,
they love this Tuesday evening. Next week
it’ll be quite the contrary. Whereas Thursday last week
they could, for example, put on a new suit)
and those who take this opportunity
not to break with the general scheme:
Stomil sneakers, shabby briefcase, the right names in mind,
suggesting satisfactory mastery
of some old edition of An Abridged Dictionary of World Writers.
But all of us, all of us
will meet in the hospital for sociologists.

Śmierdząc okrutnie
sławną mieszaniną:
Gówno, brak wody,
tanie perfumy

00:00 / 00:00

to znaczy jutro, mają mianowicie święto.
Dlatego jeszcze bardziej od wtorku w tym tygodniu,
a jeszcze bardziej od środy w tym tygodniu,
lubią wieczór wtorkowy w tym tygodniu. W przyszłym tygodniu
odwrotnie. Natomiast w czwartek, w zeszłym tygodniu,
mogli na przykład założyć nowy garnitur)
i na tych, którzy korzystają ze sposobności,
by nie wyłamać się z pospolitego schematu:
trampki ze “Stomilu”, zbutwiała walizka, znajomość nazwisk,
sugerująca opanowanie w sposób zadowalający
jakiegoś starego wydania “Małego Słownika Pisarzy Świata”.
Ale wszyscy, wszyscy
spotkamy się w szpitalu dla socjologów.

Seven Years Later, He Suddenly Feels a Nostalgic Need to Join the Paramilitary

00:00 / 00:00

This city killed Peiper.
In another, someone unremarkable burned like parchment.
The climate does not favor bodily decay.
Humanity consumed by the fire of progress.
And what have I achieved?
I outgrew the rug frame in the building’s courtyard
where I played Nadia Comaneci
on the pommel horse from 1973 to 1978. With
a pacifist’s hand I unearthed from a drawer
the medal my grandfather got for ’39. I wasted the precious moments
of my madness playing the fool
for the officer corps. I disdained
social organizations; somewhere, I did
more good than they. For that, may
your mythologies condemn me,
may that I be prohibited from remembering
the past, though whatever I do
I do in its name.

Nagle po siedmiu latach czuje nostalgiczną potrzebę zapisania się do ORMO

00:00 / 00:00

To miasto zabiło Peipera.
W innym ktoś nieistotny spłonął jak pergamin.
Klimat nie sprzyja rozkładowi ciała.
Ludzkość trawiona ogniem postępu.
A czego ja dokonałem?
Że przerosłem trzepak na podwórzu kamienicy
gdzie jako Nadia Comaneci oddawałem się
fikaniu kozłów między 1973 a 1978. Że
wydłubałem z szuflady ręką pacyfisty
dziadkowy medal za 39. Że trwoniłem cenne chwile
własnego szaleństwa na popisywanie się
głupotą przed kadrą oficerską. Że lekceważyłem
organizacje społeczne gdzieś mając
ich wyższą użyteczność. Niech za to
potępią mnie wasze mitologie
i wydany mi będzie zakaz wspominania
przeszłości, a wszystko co robię,
robię w jej imieniu.

On the Notion of Equality

00:00 / 00:00

Another anniversary of Martial Law. Time for street
surveys set up by local TV. The majority of questionnaires
affirm the decision to give the order to move against
the Cheyenne. During peak viewership,
Erich H. turns his mystical visage
towards us. In the elementary schools, they’re getting ready
to perform nativities. Everyone wants to be the Mother of God. The angels
are quitting the Sierra Maestras and entering Havana.
All that matters is the here and now. On the other side
of the wall, the product of a technical idea we once found
attractive is dying, the refrigerator I called Towiański.
I don’t get involved in politics.
Towiański sways helplessly on his four legs.

O idei równości

00:00 / 00:00

Kolejna rocznica stanu wojennego. Czas ulicznych
sond urządzanych przez lokalne telewizje. Większość ankietowanych
potwierdza słuszność decyzji wydania rozkazu wyruszenia
przeciw Czejenom. W porze największej oglądalności
Erich H. kieruje ku nam swoje
mistyczne oblicze. W podstawówkach trwają przygotowania
do jasełek. Każdy chce być Matką Boską. Aniołowie
opuszczają Sierra Maestre i wkraczają do Hawany.

The Blue Eyes of
the Proletariat

für Dirk

00:00 / 00:00

The factories are not waiting on our poems.
The cigars of the smokestacks are burning up for nothing. Steel
thoughtlessly fills out its forms.
The people have occupied the downtown,
and now we’re of no use to anyone.
A shame.
The two worlds of my pockets.
The two empty worlds of my pockets.

Niebieskie oczy
proletariatu

für Dirk

00:00 / 00:00

Fabryki nie czekają na nasze wiersze.
Cygara kominów spalają się na próżno. Stal
wypełnia bezmyślnie swoje formy.
Lud zajął śródmieścia
i nikomu już nie jesteśmy potrzebni.
Bieda.
Dwa światy moich kieszeni.
Dwa puste światy moich kieszeni.
